How it plays

How Generals.io plays

Generals.io is played on a square grid. Each player starts with a general on one tile, and the game ends for you when another player captures it; the home page sums it up as 'Protect your general. Capture enemy generals.'

The tutorial teaches the controls in one line: 'Click on your general to select the army there. Then, click on an adjacent tile to capture it, or use WASD.' Ours reached turn 6 with an army of 156, next to a row of mountains and a town held by 40 troops, while the rest of the map stayed dark. A real four-player free-for-all from 23 September 2026 lasted 335 turns.

Matches come in 1v1, 2v2, free-for-all and bigger team modes. Since version 31.4.4 a free-for-all needs at least three players to start. A ranked 1v1 season runs alongside; the Season 46 championship was 43 days away on 23 October 2026.

The game has been online since at least February 2017, the date on its terms page, and its main game file was updated on 21 October 2026.

Your first game

  1. Step 1

  2. Step 2
Play the tutorial against the built-in bot to learn the controls.
  3. Step 3
Join 1v1 or free-for-all from the main menu. Free-for-all starts once three players are in.
  4. Step 4
Link an email later if you want to recover the account.

Money, chat and age

The only thing for sale is Supporter, at $2 for one month or $5.10 for three. It removes adverts and adds custom maps, colour choice and name changes, and the support page promises 'free-to-win (as opposed to pay-to-win)'. There are no paid random items.

The main menu opens on two public chat rooms, Global Chat and Chinese Chat, before you join a match. You can mute and collapse them, block invites and friend requests, and the version notes mention a filter for harmful usernames.

We found no age rule and there is no app, so no PEGI rating exists. A parent deciding for a younger player should look at the public chat first.

Good for

Quick 1v1 duels, lunch breaks and players who like a ranked ladder.

Harder for

Younger players, because the menu opens on public chat. Also anyone who prefers turns to real-time clicking.
